OBAMA'S LOVE AFFAIR WITH LINCOLN

So President-Elect Obama is really playing up Abraham Lincoln as his Hero. We know Lincoln set in motion the acts to end slavery in America but honest Abe was not necessarily against it. Do you think OBAMA is "carrying" by highlighting Lincoln? Does reading the text below from the Emancipation Proclamation change your views about Lincoln?

In a shrewdly penned August reply to an editorial by Horace Greeley in the influential New York Tribune, with a draft of the Proclamation already on Lincoln's desk, the president subordinated the goal of ending slavery to the cause of preserving the Union, while, at the same time, preparing the public for emancipation being incomplete at first. Lincoln had decided at this point that he could not win the war without freeing the slaves, and so it was a necessity "to do more to help the cause":
I would save the Union. I would save it the shortest way under the Constitution. The sooner the national authority can be restored; the nearer the Union will be "the Union as it was." ... My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause. I shall try to correct errors when shown to be errors; and I shall adopt new views so fast as they shall appear to be true views. I have here stated my purpose according to my view of official duty; and I intend no modification of my oft-expressed personal wish that all men everywhere could be free.

I hated history but I paid attention because I know i would be forced to relive it if I didnt know it now I have forgot a bit but I do know that reading things like this never do any justice without having the actual person here to question. I mean maybe abe did want to free slaves but didnt want to seem so "pro-black" to everyone I mean look at the time they were in and still to this day its hard to do great without hearing little negative about it. Or maybe he really only ended it because it would better the Union. What i do know is my view of Abe will never be changed. He was a great president, for instance whether he wanted to end it or not he personally visited over 100 plantations to tell the slaves that they were free, he wanted them to hear it from him. Also his closest advisor was Frederick Douglas(former slave).Plus I feel like he was the BQ PRESIDENT(NO-SHADE).

Glinda you turned that response. I remember one time I was in class down in the deep south and we were talking about Civil Rights. All the while the teacher discussed John F. Kennedy. When I asked her what about Martin Luther King Jr she said that he was our (meaning "black") man and Kennedy was there's. She further proceeded to ask who in the class would have owned slaves and THE PRINCIPAL'S DAUGHTER said she would have been an owner (as per the times in the deep south)...

Those two senences disturb me as much as watching a black drag queen wear the confederate flag in TO WONG FOO(NO SHADE RU). "OURS THERES".....I would have asked "if the tables were turned would you advise me to own white slaves". As the teacher goes she probally would haave been found beat up somewhere..(anger management issues)

I still remember another time I thought I liked this white girl and tried to date her. She told me she liked me but ... NATURE preventing us from dating and her parents would not approve...I left her alone...I guess this is why I take Lincoln's deed with a grain of salt...

... but now that I look back on her "nature" statement maybe ole girl was right!!!!

I think that Abe was a peacemaker and that to keep his "loyalty to the people", meaning white people. He had to in a sense give a disclaimer for his actions of setting the slaves free. Like Glenda said... we have no way of truly knowing his intentions or his views without being able to ask him. We can only make assumptions on his state of mind based on what history has written to be true.
