When I think of the old way, I think of my beginning. My beginning both in the ball scene as well as the gay club scene. Picture it 1975 "Better Days" Eight Ave & 49th St. NYC. Friday, Saturday and Sunday night's the club remained packed with people. You had two dance floors on one level, the first floor room was dark. But in the back dance room, there was light and mirrors, tables and chairs. The hip dance of course was the "Hustle". That was what the back dance floor was mainly for, as well as crusing and taking a break from the crowded first floor. But more importantly, was the few individuals who prided themselves on modeling in the mirror, or at least that is what I thought it was. Styling and posing to the music, catching the beats, by simply turning your kangol hat sideways and then bringing it back, taking a step or two and pivoting with grace all to the beat. A Feeling of euphoria, pride and effect. Every week, there were new individuals struting and carrying on, they were in their own world. In the mid to late 70's you had at the balls many fem queens gracing the runways, with styles and unique poses all of their own. As well as the girls who would do the shows, they would lip-sync and pose. This was all of the old way. The creative way of performing. As the late 70's came in and the masculine images grew within the ball scene, there were new challenges and ways to express yourself.... When I think of the progenitors such as "Erskine Christian," "Michael Princess" "Rober Dupree" and so on. I think of all the creators of the old way. The style, the attitude, the modd, it all reflected the time. The time when cabaret and vaudeville were in effect. The Classics... The fact that MFSB "Love is the Message" had just been born in 1972 along with the record "Carl Bean's ,,,,I am happy carefree and Gay I was born this way".....It was when marijuana was the drug of choice, every now and again, you'd get some of the acid, tab dropping children. However it wasn't about the drugs as much as the drug of choice was the music, the ball, the lights, THE TIMES. As we advanced with the male (BQ Categories) In the early 80's, we advanced in the old way. We called it:"Pop dip n spin", we called it "Excalibur," we called it "Performance." Vogue was many things, it was a way of life and it was a presentation.

As the mid eighties approached like many cultures we were evolving, thus New Way was presented. However, the AIDS crisis was also present. I remember in 1989 ,at the Omni Ball "TRACKS NY" was when we embarked on support from the Design Industry Foundation For AIDS. it opened up the ball community to become a COMMUNITY. We united, the Design Industry, the celebreties, the major corporations, (ie. Absolue Vodka) the music industry, Madonna, designers jean Paul Gaultier/Thierry Mugler, the 5th Ave stores. All for the support of a community was was suffering from a most tragic diseas, AIDS. The Forum was the Roseland Ballroom, May 1989. the room was filled with 1000s of patrons, celebrities, media etc; and the ball communities chosen ones. The Extrava's, The Labeija's , The Omni's, The Ninja's , The pendavis's, The Magnifique's, The Del Rios"s.
The House could not be sued for usage of any claimed name. "Madonna" saw interst in Jose, "Willie" was discovered for his talents. The Ball scene was opened to the world that year for its voguing and other talents, The beads and rhinestones were all still in effect. Ms Avis Pendavis, Ms Peppa Labeija, Ms Dorian Corey all the girls were there and gave their performances, including Ms Angie Extravaganza. And yes I kevin Omni sat on that stage judging with Ms Queen Latifah, Iman and a a host of others. I was and still am so very proud. Proud of this ballroom community. Proud of when I look back over the past 30 years, I still know that the old way exists, because that spirit, we will always keep that attitude, we will always have that step, that grace and it will be in us always to pose, style and move.
